Traditional Talk Therapy

At families in Focus, we offer a more traditional talk therapy. Talking therapy can (cognitive behaviour therapy, solution focus therapy) involves talking about your thoughts, feelings and behaviour. Describing what’s going on in your head and how that makes you feel can help you notice any patterns you may want to change.

Talking therapy is a ‘top down’ therapy which means we engage the ‘thinking brain’ (cortex) to evaluate one’s thoughts and feelings as well as to problem solve and consider alternatives. These activities require high level processing and for this to be successful (‘thinking brain’ must work successfully) one must feel calm and regulated.

Often this therapy combines regulating activities like breathing, mindfulness and movement to first regulate the ‘emotional brain’ which then helps to turn on the ‘thinking brain’ so we can access those high parts of the brain.
